Use injection ports, you can get 100 of the for like $10 on amazon. Then use tyvek, synthetic filter discs, micropore tape, etc. to make a filtered gas exchange. Heat a needle and penetrate the injection port while it is still hot - virtually no contaminations that way!
Holes larger than 1mm could result in fresh air exchange instead of gas exchange which may induce early mycelium pinning, this is not normally desirable. Synthetic filter disks or Polyfill (such as pillow stuffing) are often touted as the ideal filter as these can be reused many times without hassle or breakdown of the material.

Also I highly doubt a stuffed tight AF poly filter would have no gas exchange. LC and agar colonization is so small, it shouldn't even need gas exchange. I've grown many a dishes with literally no gas exchange holes, until you get into larger substrates, you won't see the myc stall out with such a small amount of media -----

All jar lids should contain a filtered gas exchange. Without it, the mycelium could suffocate and die. Simply punch a hold in the lid and cover it with a filter patch, micropore tape, or stuff with polyfill. If you plan on to inoculate the grain with a syringe, add an injection port.

Picked up these 13mm "syringe filters" that are supposed to provide contam-free gas exchange for inoculated jars. Just drill a hole on a plastic lid, pop it in and you're good to go.
Dec 08, 2018 · If you were to use a Syringe filter to inoculate, you would likely filter out much of the mycelium and block up the port but also introduce a good avenue for contamination to ‘wick’ through if that makes sense. Once used as an actual filter, it’s gas exchange ability would be reduced severely as it would be gunked up with mycelium.
