I wouldnt recommend a filter disc for liquid culture as if it gets moisture on it, contaminants can easily seep though the moisture and into your culture. As for grain jars - I haven't had any issues with discs (or even 3M micropore tape) yet. Short answer is you can use both syringe filters or disc filters.

PES syringe filter membrane has the characteristics of high mechanical strength, it can handle high temperature liquid, and has a large flow rate (better than PTFE), and low protein binding force. With these functions, PES syringe filters can provide excellent performance for biological samples and culture media. The usable pH range is about 3-14.
Feb 13, 2014 · The syringe filters don't work for the same reason a small piece of synthetic filter disc won't work. If you get a sheet of thick felt and cut it in small squares, it will filter the air fine and provide all the gas exchange you need.
