The wheel filters are small enough to actually filter some bacteria, but mostly they just catch the dangerous binders and fillers that are in pills Honestly you don't really need these for Liquid Cultures. Any filter suitable for grain is fine for LC. You just have to make sure not to shake up the culture and get the filter wet.
Feb 23, 2013 · There are definitely better filters than cotton, (micron filters are the best, aka wheel filters or syringe filters; Sterifilt filters etc; even cigarette filters made for hand-rolling IMO), but cotton is still better than nothing if you can't/aren't willing to get a proper filter.
